YuYu Pan, born in 1937 in Indonesia, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, in Toronto, surrounded by the love of his family.

YuYu lived an extraordinary life across three countries and through eras of remarkable change. He spent his early years in Indonesia before moving to China, where he completed his education and went on to serve as a university lecturer for many years. In 2018, ever curious and ready for another adventure, he began a new chapter of his life in Canada.

Throughout his life, YuYu was known for his curiosity, kindness, humour, and generous spirit. He loved this wonderful world deeply and left it with considerable reluctance. There was simply too much still to see, learn, photograph, investigate, and perhaps climb.

Nature fascinated him endlessly, and he had a particular affection for every living creature within it. On one memorable visit to a botanical garden, his daughter turned around to speak to him, only to discover that he had disappeared. After searching for him, she finally looked up. There he was, already in his seventies, perched happily in a tree and beaming down at her. It was pure YuYu: curious, adventurous, mischievous, and entirely unconcerned with behaving his age.

With camera lenses of every imaginable size in hand, YuYu travelled widely and filled countless albums with photographs documenting the world as he saw it. Then the iPhone entered his life, and Apple could hardly have asked for a more devoted customer. No matter how much storage capacity technology offered him, somehow it was never quite enough for his photographs, ideas, discoveries, and endless curiosity.

Age did very little to slow his imagination. Even at 88, YuYu remained fascinated by new technology and continued writing his own science-fiction stories. His latest “research topic” was artificial intelligence. Shortly before the unexpected turn that took him from us, he joked that he intended to keep his physical form in good condition until technology advanced far enough for him to upload his mind into an AI program.

Those who knew him may agree that, if anyone could have found a way to make that happen, it would probably have been YuYu.

No words can fully capture his charisma, his joyful presence, or the immense space his absence now leaves behind. Yet alongside the sadness of losing him comes enormous gratitude for a life lived with such enthusiasm, for the photographs, the stories, the laughter, the questions, the adventures, and the memories that will continue to bring smiles long after the tears have passed.

YuYu will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Cuisang Lu; his daughter, Grace Pan; and by his family and friends whose lives were touched by his warmth, humour, generosity, and unmistakable spirit.
