It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Shirley Elizabeth Buchanan at Michael Garron Hospital on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Born on June 5, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved parents, William Ralph Mercer and Mildred Elizabeth Mercer, as well as her sister, Marilyn Jamieson.
Shirley was the loving wife of Harold Buchanan and a devoted and proud mother to her son, Kenny. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Sandy McKenzie; her brother, Bill Mercer (Debra); her brother-in-law, Adam Jamieson; and her many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
Shirley was an active member of The Orange Lodge and The Legion; Shirley built many lasting friendships throughout her life. She had a passion for singing karaoke and was known for bringing joy, laughter, and warmth wherever she went—always kind, dependable, and someone you could count on.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22, 1240 Woodbine Avenue, East York, Ontario.
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
Shirley’s presence will be profoundly missed, and she will be forever in our hearts.
