It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the unexpected loss of our beloved and beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother on February 08, 2022, at the age of 84. She left us peacefully surrounded by the love of her family.
Irene was born in Hungary in 1937, where she was orphaned as a young child, and lived her early life facing near insurmountable challenges. Despite many obstacles, she graduated from nursing college, and escaped a country in turmoil – during the 1956 Hungarian revolution – with Zoltan. They married in a refugee camp in France, and she crossed the ocean to arrive in Canada as a new wife and mother-to-be, all by the age of 20.
She continued her nursing career in Canada, and dedicated her life to the compassionate service of those in her care. Irene’s many years working at Fudger House and Seven Oaks Nursing Home would impact her greatly for the rest of her life. Staff became lifelong friends and patients became as close as family. She radiated a positive energy and spirit with all who crossed her path. She was well known for her kindness, strength and generosity.
Irene (known as “Kathy” to many) was much loved and cherished by a community of friends, relatives, and her long-time neighbours; Luba, Mike, Peggy, Ross, and Kathy. She had a special connection with all the members of the Scarborough Seniors Writing Group, who gave her the gift of being able to share her life, and record her family stories on paper, and through discussion. She will be missed greatly, most of all, by her dearest friends Lily and Aurora and her family.
Irene was devoted to her family, repeating over the years; “My only wish was to become a mother”. Her family began with two daughters, and grew to include 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren (we whispered in her ear before she passed, that the 14
th
was on the way). The children adored “Grand Mama,” and she always looked forward to the “garden party” gatherings. Her determination, courage, wisdom and deep love for her family carried her through hard times, and brought her endless joy. Irene stayed true to herself and her beliefs throughout her life, and these principles helped her create what she felt was a blessed life for her family and herself.
Irene was predeceased by her 2nd husband Vladimir Plachtinsky to whom she was married to for over 20 years. She will be missed by her Yugoslav family with whom she remained in contact, and cherished over the years.
She was predeceased by her lifelong Hungarian family, Eva and Leslie Gorog and will be missed by their children Dora (Kevin), Jeannie (Pat), Linda (Greg), Leslie and their families.
Irene leaves behind her life partner Zoltan, and their two daughters.
Daughter Katherine, her grandchildren: Emmanuel, (Valeria), Elizabeth, Alexander, (Laura), Zoe (Stefano), and Sarah, and great grandchildren: Elsie, Carter, Knox, Sebastian.
Daughter Zsuzsanna (Jimmy), her grandchildren: Enette, Emilia (Eric), Korah (Lance), Jillian (William), and James, and great grandchildren: Zander, Xaiden, Avison, Christopher, Julien, Charlie, Parker, Adelaide, Edison.
Irene will be missed every single day. From the phone calls that began with “Hello Darling” and always ended with “I love you”. To the stories and life lessons told on kitchen chairs and step stools, and under tents in the garden with children on her lap and playing in the sprinkler and laughing nearby. These are the moments which filled her heart with the greatest joy – to be surrounded by family. Her legacy will continue as we share the stories she told, the insights she shared and the lessons we learned will be passed down through the generations to come. Grand Mama wisdom: “Life itself is the most valuable teacher of “life lessons” and it is within our reach every day”.
Irene will be cremated with a celebration of life to follow in the spring. As Irene’s most prized possession were the memories she collected throughout her years, her family will be preparing a display of written memories and photos where guests will be invited to “take a walk down memory lane”. All friends and relatives are invited to send a story and/or photo of a memory they have of Irene to the email address below to be included in this memorial.
