Our beautiful, beloved Mom and Omi left us on September 10, 2024 to be with our Dad and Jesus in the glory of heaven where her body and her soul will hurt no more.
Gail was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario with her beloved parents Howard and Madonna, sister Gloria, brother Howie and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Gail moved to Toronto in 1963 to attend Shaw Business College to become a secretary and that is where she met her life-long sister friend, Clara and quickly became part of the Heim family.
Gail moved in with Clara and her Donauschwaben family. With them she learned how to cook (she made THE BEST soup) and how to speak Donauschwaben German. They introduced her to The Toronto Donauschwaben Club and that is where she met Mike, our Dad. They married in 1966 and in 1968 bought a home on Presley Avenue in Scarborough where they created and raised their family until Dad passed away in 2023.
Gail was a secretary her whole career, working first at Canada Life, then Canada Permanent Bank. Most of her long career was at Toronto District School Board as a public school secretary where she enjoyed her work and was loved by all.
What she treasured most in her life were her roles of “Mom” and “Omi”. Gail was the embodiment of a “mama bear”. She was Mom or Omi to everyone, in fact, there were very few people who actually used her given name. She deeply loved the Lord, her family and friends, crafting, a party with good eats and dancing, and putting ketchup on absolutely everything. She had a very tender heart, felt deeply, loved immensely and always put everyone and everything before herself.
Gail is predeceased by Mike, her husband of 57 years. She leaves behind her daughters Christina (Rob) and Michelle (Dan); her grandchildren Zachary (Kelsey), Elise (Manuela), Evan, Maddy and bonus granddaughter Sarah and her cherished great-granddaughter Amelia. Gail will be deeply missed by her sister Gloria, brother Howie, in-laws Bruce and Helga; niece Erin (Ryan) and nephew Craig, great- nephews Austin and Dawson, great-nieces Lauren and Simone and cherished “framily” Clara, Barb, Joe, Sandra and Ursula. She will be overjoyed to be reunited in eternity with Dad, her best friend Sue, her parents and so many other family members and friends.
Christina and Michelle would like to thank the staff and residents at Four Elms Retirement Residence for providing Mom with such a great last year of her life, full of fun and new friendships. A very heartfelt thank you and so much gratitude to Kensington Hospice for the exemplary care on Mom's final day. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the GoFundMe for Zak, Kelsey and Amelia’s wheelchair van or to Kensington Hospice.
Visitation will be held at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd, Toronto on Thursday, September 19th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 9:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at the same location on Friday September 20th at 11am followed by refreshments.
