John Wells (1928-2017)

John Wells died at age 89 in his home on July 24, 2017.  He is survived by his wife Sybil of 64 years, his three children, David, Peter and Heather, and his two grand children Patrick & Elena.

John was born in London, UK, coming to Canada on a scholarship to study architecture at the University of Toronto.  There he met his lifelong wife Sybil living in the campus co-op.

After graduating in 1953, and a brief association with Harry Burston, John began his architectural partnership with Elmar Tampold. Each provided complementary skills in a successful and productive practice. The firm is responsible for numerous public, institutional and private projects, but is perhaps best known for its work with student residences (set up as suites to promote social interaction vs. dorm rooms) and The Colonnade on Bloor St W in Toronto – one of the city’s earliest mixed-use buildings combining retail, office and residential (with architect Gerald Robinson).

John had a diverse range of interests including wind generation, underground houses and forestry both in Canada and Central America. He loved his Southern Ontario island cottage.  He was a gentleman in business, and a kind and generous man to his family.

Special thanks to the healthcare team at Sunnybrook Hospital, The Temmy Latner Centre and Living Assistance Services.
