Johh Elijosius, 77, beloved father and grandfather, passed away in August 2026, at the Kensington Hospice, surrounded by those he loved most. His life was a testament to kindness and patience.
A deeply spiritual man, John spent his high school years as a brother in a Monastery. There he established a relationship with God that took many forms throughout his life. He developed a sense of morality which guided his daily interactions. He was a peaceful man, never spoke a harsh word, and always offered support without judgement or criticism. His love was unconditional.
John was the youngest of five siblings, born into a family from Lithuania. His parents, were happy and affectionate people who left the pain of war behind and worked hard for their family. John had a nice childhood and a close family which was full of joy and celebration. He was predeceased by his siblings.
In his early years, John pursued a career in puppetry, and was part of a group called Frog Print Theatre. He later worked on the Canadian children’s show The Adventures of Snelgrove Snail as a professional puppeteer. He went on to develop a one man show called Dragonstew and performed it for children all over Ontario, for which he received many accolades. He loved children and was a natural performer.
John wrote a lot of poetry and was inspired by his life long friend, Richard, who became one of Canada’s leaders of the avant guard movement of the 80’s. They shared a house for many years and it was a world full of music, books, records and film. Wanting to continue his love of art, he was an early investor in video technology and started a small company called Sundance Video Productions. There was rarely a moment that you wouldn’t find him with a camera in hand, snapping photos or long framed videos of the small but innocent interactions of life.
John was an open minded man, spiritually curious, and gentle. His moral stance in the world left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Even in his last days he was patient; even with death he was kind. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, his three grand daughters, his nieces and nephews and his dear friends.
May his memory be eternal.
Rest in Peace.
Funeral proceedings will be intimate but for those interested in expressing condolences, a donation to Kensington Hospice and Palliative Care program in John’s name would be humbly appreciated.
