In his 90th year, Helmut Trupke passed away on March 5, 2026, at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Germany two years before the start of the Second World War, Helmut overcame the challenges of a difficult early life with resilience, determination, and an enduring sense of optimism. As a teenager, he immigrated to Canada with his family, building a successful life in his new country and embracing opportunities with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Helmut lived life with a spirit of adventure. Long before such travel was common, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, trekked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, explored the Galápagos Islands, and embarked on an African safari. His journeys ultimately took him to six of the seven continents (excluding Antarctica). Wherever he travelled, Helmut approached the world with wonder and gratitude.
A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Helmut was an avid sailor, skier, golfer, and tennis player. Sailing was his greatest passion, notably at Harbour City Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore, and later at Port Credit Yacht Club, where he was deeply cherished for twenty years. Many of his closest friendships were formed on the water and within the sailing community.
Music was also central to Helmut’s life. He had a deep appreciation for opera and symphony, and from an early age could often be found listening for hours. Even in his later years, music remained a source of joy and connection, reflecting both his curiosity and his love of life.
Helmut was predeceased by his first wife, Nuala Johnston (1938–2020), with whom he had his children. He was a devoted father to Patrice Gale and Richard Trupke, instilling in them resilience, a deep appreciation for life, and a spirit of curiosity and adventure.
He took great pride in supporting their many activities and remained an engaged and encouraging presence throughout their lives.
In 1994, Helmut met Carol Hochu, who would become his devoted partner and wife. They met playing tennis through the High Park Ski Club and began a lifelong love story. They married on May 18, 1996, and together built a joyful life filled with family, travel, sport, laughter, and shared pursuits. This year would have marked their 30th anniversary.
Helmut treasured being Opa to his grandchildren, Conor Gale (Teeghan), Sophie Gale, and Roisin Trupke. Time spent with them was among his most cherished experiences. Helmut’s warmth, wit, and generous nature touched everyone who knew him. He was known for his easy smile, upbeat spirit, and appreciation of life’s simple pleasures: feeding the birds from his balcony, tending to his flowers and plants, enjoying a schnapps or a Heineken, savouring a Coffee Crisp, sailing on Lake Ontario, or simply taking in the view from the home he loved overlooking the Don River Valley.
In his final two years, Helmut faced several health challenges with remarkable grace and courage. He never lost his gratitude for a life well lived or his enduring kindness. To the very end, he remained curious, charming, and unfailingly positive.
Helmut is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Patrice Gale (David Gale) and Richard Trupke (Dagmar Pagel); his grandchildren, Conor Gale (Teeghan), Sophie Gale, and Roisin Trupke; his sister, Ruth Schuette; his nieces, Karin Irwin (James) and Monique Schuette and their children; and Carol’s siblings, Joanne, Jean‑Marie, and John, who loved Helmut very much. He is also remembered by extended family in Canada, the United States, Germany, and Australia, and a wide circle of close friends and colleagues from the sailing, tennis, golf, and ski communities, and from Johnson Controls, where he worked for over 40 years.
A private family service was held at St. James Cemetery in Toronto on March 13, 2026, followed by interment. He was predeceased by his father, Helmut Trupke Sr., and his mother, Gertrude Trupke (née Honka), who are also buried there. A Celebration of Life will follow.
In his memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.
Helmut lived fully, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of joy, resilience, and unforgettable memories. He will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
