It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Ernest Mahr on September 13, 2026, at the remarkable age of 99.
A true gentleman in every sense of the word, Ernest was a man of great integrity and humility. You could trust him to solve a problem and finish a job 100%. He had an unassuming personality – he was quiet and gentle – but then he would land a witty line and have you barreling over with laughter. He had a gift for making people feel warm, welcomed and safe.
Ernest was a devoted family man. He is reunited with his beloved wife and soulmate of 58 years, Shirley Patricia, and his cherished daughter, Carol. He leaves behind his loving children, Sandy (Ian) and David (Elizabeth), as well as his treasured grandchildren, Michael, Allie, Robert, Lexie, Jeremy, Lauren, Carolyn, and Hannah, who brought him immense pride, joy, and purpose throughout his life.
Ernest's life was a story of perseverance, achievement, and adventure. Born to a family that fled war-torn Russia, he arrived in Canada in 1928 as a young child and grew up in a small farming community 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg. Life was not easy, but through hard work, determination, and a strong commitment to education, he became a highly accomplished civil engineer. Over the course of his career, Ernie led major telecommunications infrastructure projects in Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Colombia, leaving a lasting impact that continues to connect people today.
Despite experiencing profound personal loss, including the death of his only brother in World War II, and later the loss of both his daughter and beloved wife to cancer, Ernest met life's challenges with extraordinary resilience. He chose to be grateful of life and optimistic of the future, and he never lost his ability to laugh, tell a good story, or brighten the spirits of those around him.
Together with Pat, he explored the world, visiting more than 110 countries across six continents. Their travels reflected his adventurous spirit, boundless curiosity, and lifelong enthusiasm for learning. It often seemed that no sooner had he returned home than he was already planning the next journey. Even so, when pressed to name the best place in the world he ever visited, he exclaimed “Winnipeg!” According to Ernie, “The best place in the world is home”.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to his dedicated PSW team, Merlita, Shade, and Catherine, and to the staff at Wellbrook Place for their exceptional care, compassion, and friendship.
Ernest was a good and honourable man. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
