Chris (Christina Marian) Lawrence

January 23, 1948 — October 8, 2025

Chris (Christina Marian) Lawrence died October 8, 2025, at Toronto General Hospital.

Chris is deeply missed and mourned by her wife Mary Scott, son Gabriel Lawrence, daughter Ella Rayman and dear granddaughter Madison Lawrence.

Chris and Mary shared 27 wonderful years together and were married in 2005 shortly after marriage for two women became legal in Canada.

She was born on January 23, 1948, in Almonte Ontario to Art Lawrence and Marian Lawrence (Gilbert). Her family moved to Capreol Ontario (now part of Sudbury) when she was young. Chris had a deep love for northern Ontario and would speak longingly about the rivers, the trees and the wild landscape of the north.

Chris studied music and math at Queen’s University, theology at the University of Toronto and in her 40s graduated with a degree in Women’s Studies and Accounting. She was a deep and compassionate thinker and doer.

Chris worked in many social justice and nonprofit organizations in Toronto. The list includes the United Church of Canada, YWCA, Gay Community Appeal, the Women's Place, Toronto Women’s Credit Union, Women’s Book Store, Bread and Roses Credit Union, Times Change Women’s Employment, Cooperative Housing Federation, Supportive Housing Coalition, Mainstay Supportive Housing, Ontario Nonprofit Housing Association (ONPHA), City of Toronto Social Housing, Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and the Housing Services Corporation.

She was a wonderful cook and loved to feed people. She was a doting mother and grandmother, skilled knitter, teacher, math whizz, musician, swimmer, out Lesbian and lover of all dogs.

Above all she was a caring and generous, non-judgmental woman who lived her values of family, friendship, spiritual growth, community, generosity, women’s rights and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents and dear younger sister Gwen Lawrence.

A celebration of her life is being planned. No details yet.
